Gifts of letting go

Since my last post about my big shift, realizing that moving to a place we want to be is more important than what gets us there, I felt a huge weight lift. I no longer felt like I had to grasp and force something to happen in order to realize our dream. The truth is I have no control over what happens, when, or how. But I do have a choice, and I choose to move.

That realization itself was a great gift. Once I let go, put that post out into the Universe like releasing a balloon skyward, I received even greater gifts. The outpouring of support and encouragement from friends on social media was inspiring and confirming. Also, that same morning, a friend offered to connect me with a colleague in Bend, OR.

The biggest surprise, though, was the email I received from the B&B consultant who didn't have time to vet the inn I was interested in in neighboring Sisters. He had obtained the B&B's financials and wanted me to call him that afternoon to discuss the details. Apparently some space opened up in his workload and he wanted to use that time to help me. Even now, that thought fills my heart with gladness.

The bottom line from our conversation and some follow-up information regarding the inn's financials is that the B&B is a no-go. Without going into the tedious details (details that I have only a tenuous understanding of at best), the inn is overpriced and overvalued. As much as I want to own a B&B, I am not willing to pay now for revenue that doesn’t exist. As the consultant said, “You want to buy potential, not pay for potential.”

With that, I let the property go.

It never ceases to amaze me that when you ask, the Universe answers. That in letting go, you gain so much more than you think you are going to lose. In fact, I believe you can't lose something that isn’t meant for you, at least not now.

Words are at the heart of who I am and what I do as a writer, editor, and midlife mentor. I think the greatest gift of writing is that it creates the space we need to know ourselves better. When we know ourselves better, we can move toward what we want and a life that reflects our true self.
